A few words about us

il gelato owes its inspiration to its founder, Giovanni Calabro, who in the late 1990s had a dream coupled with the passion to produce artisan authentic gelato and sorbets in West Australia.

He saw a niche in the market with an emerging trend to source gourmet products and wanted to provide gourmet gelato to all West Australians. Renowned in Italy and Europe for hundreds of years, gelato had always been a desired dessert, low in fat and always delicious.

That vision became a reality with the opening of a store in 115 Oxford st Leederville in 1999.

There are still queues at this store, which attest to its popularity. It has truly become an icon on the Leederville strip and stood the test of time. The rest, as they say, is history.

The reverberations of this exciting, headline- catching launch were picked up by media outlets as far afield as Albuquerque, New Mexico.
